On behalf of The Scientific Committee of Malta Sugar & Salt Reduction Strategies, Dr Marvin Edeas, Chairman commented: our aim is to highlight strategies for the prevention of sugar-related chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases and ageing of population. Stevia will play a major and strategic role to prevent obesity and diabetes. To reach the target, we need a clear global network between all actors involved in stevia; from the agriculture to consumners.

About Stevia

Stevia is a genus of about 240 species of herbs and shrubs in the sunflower family (Asteraceae), native to subtropical and tropical regions from western North America to South America. The species Stevia rebaudiana, commonly known as sugarleaf, honeyleaf or simply stevia, is widely grown for its sweet leaves. As a sweetener and sugar substitute, stevia’s taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar,

With its extracts having up to 300 times the sweetness of sugar, stevia has garnered attention with the rise in demand for low-carbohydrate, low-sugar food alternatives.

EU Approval is expected in the second quarter of 2010.
